Definition of C-peptide testing
A C-peptide test measures the level of this peptide in the blood.
It is generally found in amounts equal to insulin because insulin
and C-peptide are linked when first made by the pancreas.
Insulin helps the body use and control the amount of
sugar (glucose) in the blood.
C-peptide has been shown to bind to the surface of a number of cell types such as neuronal,
endothelial, fibroblast and renal tubular, at nanomolar concentrations to a receptor that is
likely G-protein-coupled. The signal activates Ca2+-dependent intracellular signaling
pathways such as MAPK, PLCγ, and PKC, leading to upregulation of a range of transcription
factors as well as eNOS and Na+K+ATPase activities.

C-peptide testing can be used for a few different purposes. C-peptide is a
substance produced by the beta cells in the pancreas when proinsulin splits
apart and forms one molecule of C-peptide and one molecule of insulin.
Insulin is thehormone that is vital for the body to use its main energy source,
glucose. Since C-peptide and insulin are produced at the same rate, C-peptide is
a useful marker of insulin production.
